Joel Michaely on Working Alongside Major Actors in the Business

Joel Michaely

In this profile series, Revry is highlighting authentic contributors to the LGBTQ media and entertainment community. We ask questions to find out who they are and where they are going in the future. The questions remain the same but the answers tell their unique story. It’s time to explore and celebrate true representation beyond the limits of Hollywood.

Joel Michaely is an actor with his upcoming flicks LANKSY opposite Sam Worthington and Harvey Keitel and THE COMEBACK TRIAL opposite Robert De Niro, Tommy Lee Jones and Morgan Freeman. He will also be in Paul Schrader's THE CARD COUNTER with Oscar Isaac and Tiffany Haddish, and WILD INDIAN that was just at Sundance in Dramatic competition opposite Michael Greyesyes, Jesse Eisenberg and Kate Bosworth. Last month, he played the villain opposite Ruby Rose and Morgan Freeman in VANQUISH,  and before that he was in RUN HIDE FIGHT opposite Thomas Jane and ME YOU MADNESS with Ed Westwick.

What are you best known for?

I am definitely best known for 3 movies. The teen comedy CAN’T HARDLY WAIT  playing the biggest geek in the school with big poofy hair and a retainer with Jennifer Love Hewitt and EVERY single working actor in the business from Jason Segal to Jerry O'Connell and Peter Facinelli to Jenna Elfman and Selma Blair. And then my follow up film BUT I’M A CHEERLEADER has become a beloved queer classic that starred Natasha Lyonne, Clea Duvall, Cathy Moriarty and the great Rupaul. The final one in my trio is THE RULES OF ATTRACTION opposite James Van Derbeek, Ian Somerhalder and Jessica Biel. It is a dark edgy college manifesto with massive queer story lines. I had the honor of playing a really bitchy hard core guy with a pushy bossy personality. The polar opposite of my character Joel Goldberg in But I'm A Cheerleader.

What is the first thing you starred in/produced?

The first thing I starred in was the teen comedy CAN’T HARDLY WAIT. The first movie I produced was the second film from the director of BUT I’M A CHEERLEADER called THE QUIET that was a queer teen dramedy and thriller. It's a wild flick. The first movie I directed, I am actually gonna shoot in the fall and will let you know more about it later.

What are you working on that no one knows about yet?

Secret project that I'm working on---I am gonna direct a movie xoxo
