Meet Jeffrey Simon, Director of the Original Movie Musical Steam!

In this profile series, Revry is highlighting authentic contributors to the LGBTQ media and entertainment community. We ask questions to find out who they are and where they are going in the future. The questions remain the same but the answers tell their unique story. It’s time to explore and celebrate true representation beyond the limits of Hollywood.

Jeffrey Simon

Jeffrey Simon is an LA-based filmmaker and musician. His original movie musical STEAM! won the Best in Show at the Savannah Film Festival and will be premiering in 2022 on Revry alongside his other short film musical, SPARK. In 2017, he was invited to attend the IFP Screen Forward Labs in NYC for a series he’s creating, CAMP ABERCORN, which screened in competition at SeriesFest and NYTVF. With help from George Takei and GLAAD, the series crowdfunded over $100k on Indiegogo to shoot its pilot episode which he co-wrote and directed. Before writing and directing, he worked as an art director on films of all sizes from the indie FILLY BROWN to Marvel’s SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING and beyond with EDGE OF TOMORROW, VENOM, MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. As a musician, his debut EP of pop songs FAIRYTALES & FALLACIES is being released early 2022. He holds a BFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design and an MFA from USC School of Cinematic Arts where he was awarded the Don Thompson LGBT Scholarship. He’s a producer and co-founder of The Barn, a production company dedicated to creating indie movie musicals.

What are you best known for?

Turning everything into a musical! Before that I wore a lot of plaid with overalls and worked in the art department (see above).

What is the first thing you directed?

I directed a pilot for a series called CAMP ABERCORN back in 2014. It’s the semi-autobiographical story of a closeted Boy Scout camp staffer. It’s on my life-long bucket list to complete the series.

What are you working on that no one knows about yet?

The Barn, my indie movie musical production company, is working on a slate of projects—features and shorts—and I can’t wait to share them with the world. Personally, I have an EP of original pop songs called FAIRYTALES & FALLACIES that I’m releasing very soon!
