Acting for the Screen and Stage with Coby Getzug

Coby Getzug

In this profile series, Revry is highlighting authentic contributors to the LGBTQ media and entertainment community. We ask questions to find out who they are and where they are going in the future. The questions remain the same but the answers tell their unique story. It’s time to explore and celebrate true representation beyond the limits of Hollywood.

Coby is an LA-born, NY-based actor who has appeared on Broadway and in the national tours of THE BAND’S VISIT, THE BOOK OF MORMON, SPRING AWAKENING, and BRIGHTON BEACH MEMOIRS. He can also be seen on Disney Plus’ ENCORE, HBO’s THE DEUCE, and CBS’ GOD FRIENDED ME. Coby is an educator with artsINSIDEOUT, an arts program for mothers and children living with HIV/AIDS in South Africa. He is a proud graduate of UCLA. @cobygetzug

What are you best known for?

Being the grandchild that calls my grandparents the most often. Beyond that, I'm an actor and activist who has worked in theater and tv/film spaces in New York, Los Angeles, and around the country! I'm also a teaching artist with artsINSIDEOUT, an organization dedicated to bringing the arts to places heavily affected by HIV/AIDS. Currently, I serve as a community leader with Knock for Democracy, a group that connects people more directly with the democratic process as we work to elect Democratic leadership both locally and nationally.

What is the first thing you acted in?

My earliest work was a youth theater production of RODGER AND HAMMERSTEIN'S CINDERELLA in which I unintentionally played a very gay Prince Charming. The line was: "Have you tried the slipper on every young woman in the kingdom?" What came out was: "Have you tried the slipper on every young man in the kingdom?" Freudian!

What are you working on that no one knows about yet?

Well, currently I'm playing Papi in the national tour of THE BAND'S VISIT, a ten-time Tony Award-winning musical about a group of Egyptian musicians who come to Israel to perform in a concert and end up in the wrong city. It's a gorgeous story, and I encourage folks to come check us out in a city near them! Beyond that, stay tuned...
