Misha Calvert is an award-winning filmmaker and TV creator. who has created two original series: the Revry Original STRUT premiering on June 18, which she wrote and starred in, and ALL HAIL BETH, which she wrote and directed. She began her film career collaborating with writer/director Jonathan Levine (LONG SHOT, NINE PERFECT STRANGERS) on a short film called LOVE BYTES. She wrote and co-directed a new series called ALPHA/BETA starring Leven Rambin (THE HUNGER GAMES, THE FOREVER PURGE). In 2021, she also rewrote and directed YES, MOTHER, a short dark comedy about two women fighting for the love of their cult leader, and wrote and starred in NEW BOO, a short film about a woman dating a stuffed animal. As an actor, she has appeared regularly on the Emmy Award-winning show A CRIME TO REMEMBER. Off-Broadway writer/director credits include three Chekhovian satires set in a 1980’s high school, and the original comedy A SEAGULL IS BORN.
What are you best known for?
When I first moved to New York I did a series of performance pieces that got me a lot of press. Like, a lot. It was so overwhelming that I moved to London to recover from the stress. I’ve since transitioned into acting/writing/directing more traditional narrative content, shorts and episodic mostly. I’m based in New York now but still love to visit London. My biggest narrative project to date has been ALL HAIL BETH, a digital series I wrote and directed for BRIC TV. It’s about a depressed millennial woman who becomes a Babylonian Goddess overnight. Now that I think about it, Beth has a little bit of the same reaction to her fame that I did to the press way back when. I never actually made that connection until now.
What's the first thing you directed?
A stage production of WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF. I was 19, and somehow it wasn’t a complete catastrophe.
What are you working on that no one knows about yet?
Oh, I love this question! My slate is pretty extensive. But I’m a huge Instagram hoe, so I’m not sure how much of this is secret. I have three short films I shot this year which are all in post: ALPHA/BETA, YES MOTHER, and NEW BOO. There’s also a feature film I’m writing and directing called RAGER about the intersection of toxic wealth and toxic masculinity. It's currently in the stage of packaging with a producer. I think I’m shooting something this summer although I’m not exactly sure what yet. I want to direct something, and I want it to be filmed outside...that’s about as far as I’ve gotten. And finally I have three other pilot scripts that I sort of shelved when all those other projects picked up speed. Being a multi-hyphenate is like being a mother of ten and constantly neglecting at least three of your children at all times!
