Find Out How Lily Smith Got 42% Funnier
In this profile series, Revry is highlighting authentic contributors to the queer media and entertainment community. We ask questions to find out who they are and where they are going in the future. The questions remain the same but the answers tell their unique story. It’s time to explore and celebrate true representation beyond the limits of Hollywood.
Lily Smith (She/Her) is a writer and director living in London. She studied comedy writing at the National Film and Television School, and is now up to 42% funnier. She's created digital and written content for tech startups, charities and independent agencies – but most of all she loves creating things that make people laugh.
What are you best known for?
Probably the work I've done behind the scenes as a copywriter! I create a lot of adverts – not particularly glamorous, but it pays the bills. I just checked and my most-viewed music video on YouTube (which I directed and produced for about £200) is GARDEN by Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs with a chicken scratch 2.9 million views! But Revy very kindly features my web series RUINED: A HIPSTER GHOST STORY on their platform, which is the content I'm most proud of creating together with my friends.
What is the first thing you worked on professionally?
I was a production assistant on a doomed version of WIND IN THE WILLOWS starring the icon that is Matt Lucas. Sadly I never met him, but I did order a lot of green face paint to the set in Romania so he could transform into the character of Toad. I hear he was a delight on set – ate loads of flies.
What are you working on that no one knows about yet?
Before the pandemic I wrote and produced a musical comedy about the world's first app that sends smells, not emojis. After the success of NOSER: A STARTUP MUSICAL, I'm now writing a kids show called OH, BABY! A SHOW FOR KIDS BY ADULTS WHO ARE TRYING THEIR BEST. It is both for kids, and very much not appropriate for kids. Sort of like if Sesame Street was written by a child free woman.
