Revry Queer ClassiX Presents But I’m a Cheerleader
If you know what it’s like to be queer and in the closet, then you’ll connect with this Queer ClassiX Movie, the one and only BUT I’M A CHEERLEADER playing live on Revry every Saturday night for Pride Month.
A film ahead of its time, BUT I’M A CHEERLEADER used satire and comedy to explore the horrors of conversion therapy programs. Megan Bloomfield, a high school cheerleader, is sent to a conversion camp after her friends and family have an intervention to tell her she’s gay. It’s there that Megan embraces her sexuality, despite the therapy, and learns who she really is.
This film has a legendary cast including …. Natasha Lyonne, Clea DuVall, Cathy Moriarty, RuPaul, Joel Michaely, Douglas Spain, Michelle Williams, Melanie Lynsky, Eddie Cibrian, Kip Perdue, and even a cameo by Julie Delpy. Directed Jamie Babbit and written by Brian Wayne Peterson, it’s no wonder that this 1999 uniquely-American comedy went on to become a true cult classic within the LGBTQ world and beyond. Its cast had the perfect mix of–both–established cult classic talent and some relatively fresh faces that went on to become huge stars not long after.
Long before her creation of the global entertainment juggernaut that IS DRAG RACE, RuPaul Charles was best known as the 1990’s go-to Drag Queen and SUPERMODEL! with FULL FACE appearances in such films as TO WONG FOO, THE BRADY BUNCH MOVIE, and playing herself in WIGSTOCK: THE MOVIE. Her appearance in BUT I’M A CHEERLEADER is a rare glimpse of the queen out of makeup.
Enjoy this Director’s Cut of Queer ClassiX: BUT I’M A CHEERLEADER hosted by the amazing AB Farrelly as we share fun facts, insights, and interviews with some members of the cast only on Revry.
And–remember–if you too are struggling with same sex attraction …remember, it’s okay to be gay...even if you’re a cheerleader.
