Revry’s Streams Queer, South Asian, Bi Focused Series Insomnia starting March 18th
Insomnia, a queer South Asian dramedy from Vishaal Reddy is making its Revry network premiere on March 18, 2022 as part of Revry’s lineup of programming highlighting the Asian experience.
Asian characters make up less than 3% of on-screen characters (according to Nielsen), and only 11.8% of television characters identify as LGBTQ+ (source: GLAAD’s “Where We Are on TV 2021-2022 report). With a clear commitment to diverse and inclusive representation, 40% of Revry’s programming features LGBTQ+ characters of color including Asians. This commitment supports Vishaal’s aims to leverage Insomnia as a platform to bring attention to the stories of Asian Americans and members of the LGBTQ+ community.
Insomni isabout Nikhil Sharma (Vishaal Reddy) who is a struggling bi-sexual Indian-American writer who can’t seem to get his life together. Nikhil secretly starts moonlighting as a male escort in New York City, and through his darkly absurd, late-night adventures, he finds himself dealing with racism, sexuality, loneliness, and a lack of sleep.
The concept for the show spawned from real-life experience in NYC where Vishaal was approached by a stranger to consider taking a job as a male escort. Taking cues from shows such as Master of None, Louie, Fleabag, and High Maintenance, this is Nikhil’s journey to find love, happiness, and his true identity. This is a story about growing up. And failing. A lot.
