Transforming the Media Industry with a Unique Perspective
During Black History Month, we will spotlight the voices of Black creatives. From content creators to co-founders, we’ve asked questions to those that inspire us to tell us what’s on their mind. The interview questions remain the same throughout, but the answers provide a unique view of every single person.
Today, we get to know LaShawn McGhee, the co-founder and chief production officer at Revry. LaShawn goes by she/her pronouns. As a queer woman of color, she is taking her passion for the art of storytelling and transforming the industry with her perspective that’s unlike any other. LaShawn’s frame of mind is best described in her own words:
“We need to be able to see and connect with more people from both similar AND different walks of life. We may not get along with or have camaraderie with every member of our family. Celebrate our similarities and differences. At the end of the day, everyone’s human.” (Source)
What does Black History Month mean to you?
Black History Month is a time to celebrate the rich heritage and contributions of Black Americans. It is especially poignant in this moment in history because we are so divided as a nation. Taking the time to highlight Black Americans, more specifically Queer Black Americans, is a necessity and I’m proud to be able to do that through Revry.
What kind of stories do you feel still need to be highlighted for the Black queer community?
I would love to see the Queer Black equivalent of "Bro Movies". It would be great to take heteronormative tropes and tell stories with black queer spin on them.
In celebration of Black History Month, Revry has curated a powerful collection of stories told by Black artists featuring films, TV series, music, and more. See the playlist on Revry.
