Vishaal Reddy Focuses Stories on South Asian Americans and the LGBTQ Community

Vishaal Reddy

In this profile series, Revry is highlighting authentic contributors to the LGBTQ media and entertainment community. We ask questions to find out who they are and where they are going in the future. The questions remain the same but the answers tell their unique story. It’s time to explore and celebrate true representation beyond the limits of Hollywood.

Vishaal Reddy is an actor, singer, writer, and producer from Tennessee and based in NYC. He received his undergraduate degree at Boston University, studying Business Administration and Theater. Additionally, he has acting training at the Atlantic Theater Conservatory and Oxford University. He was selected as one of the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival Creator N.O.W. creators. Additionally, Vishaal was recently awarded the SF Film Rainin grant to develop and write his first feature film. Upon moving to NYC, he worked in Off-Broadway plays and musicals, while also delving into the television world. His recent credits include THE PUNISHER, BULL, and BIG DOGS. Feeling frustrated with the industry's portrayal of Indian characters, he started writing and producing his own screenplays and sketches. His ultimate goal is to use his production company as a platform for content and education, focusing on the stories of South Asian Americans and people in the LGBTQ community. Through this endeavor, Vishaal hopes to continue performing, while ultimately building up a studio that produces tv/film/theatre/music content for underrepresented voices. If you like sarcasm, Fleabag, and ice cream, we'll get along.

What are you best known for?

Professionally: My digital series INSOMNIA, a series chronicling a queer, Indian-American escort dealing with generational trauma, race, and sex work in NYC.

Personally: The fact that I love desserts so much that I've cried describing a cookie. Not my proudest moment.

What is the first thing you acted in?

The first thing I ever acted in was my kindergarten play, HANSEL & GRETEL. I played Hansel because no one else wanted to and I volunteered. That's when I knew I wanted to be a performer.

What are you working on that no one knows about yet?

I am working on a new TV show that's a dark comedy about Indians being model minorities. I'm very excited about it!
