Avec Moi Sweets Owner Dana Nguyen
In this profile series, Revry is highlighting authentic contributors to the LGBTQ community. We ask questions to find out who they are and where they are going in the future. The questions remain the same but the answers tell their unique story.
Dana Nguyen is the owner and baker of Avec Moi Sweets. She is a first generation Vietnamese-American, born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri. She spent her childhood in the kitchen in her parent’s restaurant, and in the past has worked many different positions in the food and beverage industry. She has degrees in Business Communications, as well as Public Relations in advertising and promotions. Dana also gained her MBA with emphasis in Hospitality Management.
After working in hotels for 9 years, Dana switched gears and went into restaurant management. When the pandemic hit she stepped back into the kitchen and started baking. What began as perfecting a recipe, turned into a fully formed and growing small business- now known as Avec Moi Sweets.
What are you best known for?
Off the bat, I am known for being ‘spicy’ lol But honestly, I’m also known for putting traditional Asian (mostly Vietnamese) flavors into French-style baking. Like fresh durian into a macaron! Everyone that knows me knows I am a cook first before a baker…. Baking was a happy accident.
What is the first thing you baked?
The first thing I baked was an Earl Grey French macaron. Earl Grey buttercream, with an Earl Grey pot de crème center.
What are you working on that no one knows about yet?
Recently, I’ve been expanding my sweets horizons beyond the macaron. Focusing more on Asian flavors with western style baking techniques…and vice-versa. My real goal here is to bring Asian flavors to the Midwest. #doingitfortheculture
