DeAndre Upshaw

During Black History Month, we are spotlighting the voices of Black creatives. From content creators to co-founders, we’ve asked those that inspire us to share what’s on their mind. The interview questions remain the same throughout, but the answers provide a unique view of every single person.

Standing at 6 feet 7 inches, DeAndre Upshaw does not come short on his list of talents. He is a model, a lifestyle, fitness, and wellness coach, a professional cinematographer, editor, and more. He uses his platform and artistry as a way to show real transparency through his journey as a Queer Black American, which can be seen on his Instagram @heyitsdeandre

What does Black History Month mean to you?

For me, Black History Month is an acknowledgement and celebration of the contribution of black people in America. An opportunity to examine our triumphs, but also to reflect on the past in order to make way for a better future.

How does your storytelling speak to the Black experience?

I believe that we all have the gift of storytelling. I do it through interviews and film, others do it through art, music, or dance expression. It's important to tell stories that shed light on the black experience because there's so much beauty, so much history and so much joy to be found within.

What kind of stories do you feel still need to be highlighted for the black queer community?

We need to uplift and spotlight our trans community. They contribute so much to not only black culture, but our entire shared American culture. Their stories have always existed, they are just now beginning to be told.

In celebration of Black History Month, Revry has curated a powerful collection of stories told by Black artists featuring films, TV series, music, and more. See the playlist on Revry.
